Christian Education and Formation for Children

CHURCH SCHOOL

Children are seen not simply as our future, but an important part of our present. Every Sunday, during the school year, children gather in our church school classroom to participate in a Montessori based program of Christian education called “Godly Play” where through story and play children learn important stories of the Bible as well as core teachings of the faith.

STORYACTING SUMMER PROGRAM

Let’s play, tell stories, and act them out…together! As a former kindergarten teacher, Ms. Jubie-Shepard developed a storyacting program inspired by Vivian Gussin Paley, teacher in the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, author, and recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship Genius Grant. Creativity, innovative problem solving, literacy skills, and community building are active components of imaginative play and storyacting. While children engage in their cognitive work of play, each child has an opportunity to tell a story and have it scribed by the teacher. The class gathers in a circle to share stories. Everyone has a chance to be an author, an actor, and an audience member. Once assigned a character, the actors step inside the circle, or “stage” and begin impromptu acting…reacting to the words of the story as it is read aloud to the group. Come, join us in building a community where voices are heard, stories are honored, and we share in the magic of imagination! Watch the front page for information on when the next program will occur.

NURSERY

Every Sunday, from September through May, a nursery for small children and infants is available. This space is staffed by two individuals who provide a safe and supportive environment for young children ages 0-4.
